Family-run free house serving locally caught fish

Open all year

In the historic village of Appledore, this free house has a rotating selection of ales and ciders, as well as 35 wines by the glass. Ray and Sandra Cottingham have run The Black Lion for the past 21 years and they have built up a great reputation for their food, especially local fish. A typical meal might include tiger prawns sautéed with garlic, ginger and spring onion; grilled lemon sole with peas and potatoes; and Romney Marsh lamb pie. Time a visit for a bank holiday, when the chefs cook a giant paella and pig roast on the pub’s forecourt.
