Opened in 2016, the Smugglers’ Alehouse (formerly The Black Pig) focuses on the wet side of the business. An eclectic array of tavern tables and chairs, oxblood pews and pewter jugs revive memories of the notorious era when contraband smuggling was all the rage in this area. Expect to find half a dozen regional brewers on tap, backed by a lager, a stout, a cider or three and a good choice of wines and soft drinks. To mop up your chosen refreshment, nibbles, nachos, the ‘seven guinea bounty’ (a ploughman’s), a chilli, and a hot dish of the day are always available. Take note of the unusual opening hours when planning a visit.
