Behind this early 19th-century inn are Ashwell Springs, source of The Cam, the river that from here heads for nearby Cambridge. A handsome brick building, the pub has a pergola-shaded patio and lovely gardens to the rear. For lunch try a Crumps steak sandwich, or omelette Arnold Bennett. Poached Dingley Dell pork tenderloin; sea bass fillet, smoked parsnip purée, pear, purple potatoes, vanilla poached crayfish and passionfruit; and warm vegetable salad are dinner possibilities. Highlighted on the menu as favourites are pan-fried calves’ liver; tempura-battered fish and chips; and steak frites. Potential dessert candidates include sticky toffee pudding, and iced lemon parfait. Wines are from Argentina to New Zealand, by way of Austria.
