With its 16th-century origins, traditional wood-burning stoves and friendly atmosphere, this delightful riverside inn exudes a warm welcome. It makes an ideal base for exploring the Golden Valley, the Brecon Beacons National Park and Offa’s Dyke. Cask-conditioned ales and a selection of local ciders are bar highlights; over the Bank Holiday weekend in August, a festival celebrates both forms of refreshment. Heartwarming dishes on their interesting menus are Persian lamb served with za’atar potatoes and steamed vegetables; steak frites; and Escleyside pie – beef, bacon and Butty Bach beer pie with hand-cut chips. If you have room you could be tempted by plum crumble or sticky toffee pudding.
