Strategically located where the old London to Exeter and Oxford to Southampton roads cross, this was Swindon brewery Arkell's first Hampshire pub. Dating from 1461, its rich history includes patronage by the late Lord Denning, Master of the Rolls, who was born opposite. What he dined on is unknown, but today's menu lists jacket potatoes; steak and ale pie; Somerset pork casserole; beer-battered fish and chips; and sizzling home-made fajitas. For vegetarians, there's three-cheese macaroni, and vegetable Madras. Just over the road is Whitchurch Silk Mill, the oldest of its type in the UK in its original building, and still using 19th-century machinery.
