'Chocolate' and 'box' come to mind on first seeing this flower-adorned, thatched, 17th-century inn. In a south-facing garden, surrounded by fields, trees and grazing ponies, it's just beyond the edge of the New Forest National Park. AA Rosette-standard food is served in all five public areas, including the comfortable, fire-warmed lounge bar, that offers Ringwood beers and cider from Burley, both nearby. There's a large outdoor terrace, a 60-seat restaurant and the oak-beamed snug offers biscuits and water for your dog. Menu favourites of spiced chicken Maryland, and steamed steak and kidney suet pudding, join specials of fish and lobster from the coast at Mudeford; braised rabbit with spätzle pasta; and linguine with buffalo mozzarella from ex-Formula One racing driver Jody Scheckter's organic farm. A cider festival takes place during the summer holidays, followed by a beer festival at the end of September.
