Run by Ben and Amy Chester-Sterne, this 17th-century coaching inn is tucked away in the heart of the beautiful Meon Valley. Roaring fires, low beams and plenty of nooks and crannies provide a high comfort factor in winter but enjoy pints of Flowerpots Goodens Gold or Lilley’s Bee Sting Perry in the secluded rear garden in summer. Home-cooked food makes good use of local ingredients in simple dishes such as faggots and Irish stew, as well as no-frills snacks of fishfinger sandwiches and chilli jacket potatoes. Time a visit for the beer festival in mid-September.
