Weary walkers, cyclists, well-behaved children and dogs are all very welcome at this privately owned bar and restaurant. So too are those interested in the English Civil War keen to follow the trail to the nearby site of the Battle of Cheriton, fought in 1644. Food is a high point, especially the game and fresh fish; portions are reputedly generous. Seasonal menus cover all bases, with dishes such as Malaysian chicken korma; Atlantic wholetail scampi; gammon steak and eggs; and sausages and mash. Their real ale policy favours those brewed in Hampshire.
