Stylishly reborn old coaching inn

At a glance

Bar menu
Open all year

On the old coach road between Newbury and Andover, the 16th-century George and Dragon reopened its doors in 2014 following a year-long restoration. The big bay window is where travellers would eat and drink while keeping an eye out for their coach, well known for its all-too-brief stops. House beer is Betteridge's brewed about a hundred metres away, the cider is Purbeck's Dorset Draft, and carefully chosen wines are available by the glass and carafe. On the easy-to-digest, seasonal menu might be venison carpaccio with smoked parsnip purée; roasted monkfish with pulled pork raviolo and bean, pea and pancetta broth; and Isle of Wight Blue cheese gnocchi.
