Worth a visit when in the Winchester/Southampton area, the 18th-century Dog & Crook provides a wide choice of food. Begin with Welsh rarebit and buttered leeks, or Brussels pâté, then choose between, say, beef Stroganoff with rice, spinach and onions, and grilled pork chop with fondant potato, green bean and pea fricassée, and apple jus. Beer-battered haddock is a pub favourite, and spinach and ricotta tortellini is popular with vegetarians. There's also a special fish menu. For dessert try white chocolate and redcurrant cheesecake with vanilla ice cream, or sponge pudding of the day.
