This is an unpretentious, white-painted pub with abundant country charm – the staff are friendly and the locals clearly love the place. The Bowman Brewery a mile away supplies the bar with Swift One and Wallops Wood, so why look any further afield, asks owner Adam Cordery. Pick from a list of hot filled baguettes, while over the big log fire a blackboard lists the main dishes. Among these will be the day's pie, burgers, sausages or steaks; and maybe roasted game with dauphinoise potatoes, red cabbage, celeriac purée and elderberry gravy; Bakers fish pie with gratinated cheese and potato topping, served with vegetables or dressed leaves; and Devon crab thermidor with skinny fries, slaw and lemon mayonnaise.
