An early 20th-century country house that became a B&B in the Sixties, a Seventies’ dance venue and then a restaurant, until Brunning & Price bought and transformed it. The outside looks good, and the inside can hold its head high too, with open fires, honest-to-goodness furniture and a decent bar, where the six real ales include Tring Brewery's Side Pocket for a Toad, and whiskies top 140. Daily menus offers dishes such as sweetcorn pannacotta, Moroccan croquette, avocado and coriander salsa, sweet chilli popcorn; bouillabaisse; pork tenderloin green curry with lemongrass cauliflower cake; and smoked salmon and haddock fishcakes. An outside bar and barbecue function in the summer.
