A beautiful Cotswold-stone 17th-century inn on the square of the pretty former wool town of Northleach, The Wheatsheaf is everything anyone could wish for, with flagstone floors, beams, log fires and a vibrant, smartened-up feel throughout. It’s the perfect place for enjoying bracing walks then chilling out in the bar with the papers or sampling some seriously good food. Monthly menus evolve with the season and may take in twice baked soufflé; wood pigeon saltimbocca; ox tail, rib and oyster pie, mash and roasted beets; and roast cod loin, Puy lentils, root vegetables and pancetta.
