Set between rolling hills and the River Severn in a delightful rural village, this 16th-century inn is owned by Tony and Gill Burreddu. Although alterations have been made over the years, the original beams and iron fireplaces have been kept, simply complemented with comfortable armchairs, antiques and a gallery of local artists’ work. As a free house, the Queens offers ales from a range of breweries including Brecon Brewing and Shepherd Neame. Tony and Gill have built a loyal customer base and an excellent reputation for imaginative dishes made from the best local produce. Specials board entries may include a starter of filo prawns with sweet and sour sauce; a main course of Greek lamb studded with garlic and herbs, braised in rich red wine gravy and served with mint yogurt; and Cape brandy pudding – a South African speciality made with light sponge and brandy-soaked dates.
