This handsome, stone-built inn is just a short meadow walk from the source of the Thames; you can sit in the two-acre grounds with a pint of Wadworth 6X or Swordfish and savour the glorious country views. Dating back to 1827, the inn oozes historic charm and character with its original beams and roaring log fires aplenty. The seasonal menus combine traditional pub classics, including fish and chunky chips, with modern ideas, perhaps pan-seared sea bass, stir-fried chilli, ginger and spring onion, warm potato salad, tomato and seasonal vegetables; lamb and mint burger, toasted brioche bun with goats' cheese and red onion relish; or red pepper and sun-blushed tomato tart, sautéed potatoes with rocket and parmesan salad.
