Now a stylish and popular free house that’s part of Calcot & Calcot Spa this stone farmhouse was originally built by Cistercian monks in the 14th century. Part of the Calcot Collection, the buzzy and comfortable Gumstool Inn has a proper country-pub atmosphere and stocks a good selection of West Country ales such as Butcombe Bitter, as well as Mortimers Orchard cider. An excellent choice of more than 20 wines is offered by the glass or bottle. The food here is top-notch and there is a pronounced use of local suppliers and seasonal produce. A typical meal might kick off with starters of crispy duck salad, soy, chilli, cucumber, spring onion, radish and sesame; or honey-roast figs, Parma ham, ricotta and toasted hazelnuts. Among the main courses may be found truffled chicken kiev, wild mushrooms, parsley mash and seasonal greens. Leave a space for the apple and rhubarb crumble with ice cream or the old-fashioned but comforting treacle tart. In the summer, grab a table on the pretty, flower-filled sun terrace, while indoor winter evenings are warmed with log fires.
