Conveniently positioned between Saffron Walden and Royston, this 500-year-old thatched pub is very much the hub of the local community. Ales such as Nelson’s Revenge, and ciders from Aspall, are locally brewed or from East Anglia. The seasonally changing restaurant carte typically offers king prawn skewers, glazed with honey and garlic, followed by home-made pie of the day with mash and seasonal vegetables. The pub’s social calendar is full to bursting, with music (or ‘moosic’ to use one of the pub’s favoured beef-based puns) particularly high on the agenda. If a quieter life is preferred, a proper English afternoon tea is served at weekends.
