AA Pick of the Pubs
Aged 19, Trevor Oliver, already married to Sally, became one of England's youngest licensees. In 1976 they arrived at this delightful 16th-century inn, he in the kitchen and she front-of-house and book-keeper. Two babies came too – Anna-Marie and Jamie (yes, that Jamie) so, who knows, maybe he'll be visiting his parents the day you visit, for he and his sister supply vegetables, salad leaves and herbs from their certified organic garden nearby. Food shows the now-famous Oliver's focus on flavour, with all the fish fresh from Billingsgate market, meat hung and butchered on site, and bread and pasta made every morning. Daily specials complement a menu that offers lamb shank with slow-braised root vegetables; 'Jamie's' chicken katsu curry; vegetable Wellington, and plenty to tempt children. Terrace dining is an appealing option.
