The Bull, overlooking the cricket green, is a 16th-century coaching inn and proud holder of two AA Rosettes. It offers not far short of 20 fine wines by the glass, real ales from Adnams and Greene King, and a bar menu of baguettes, sausage and mash, and beer-battered cod tail. Named after the ancient tree in the lavender-filled garden is the fine-dining Willow Room, where you might start with crispy duck egg, Russian salad and truffle dressing then follow with marinated loin of venison, pear, braised red cabbage, fondant potatoes and chocolate jus; or the Bull’s mixed grill – beef medallion, sausages, gammon and fried egg. If you’re a vegetarian, the pan-fried aubergine and goats’ cheese roulade and tomato sauce might take your fancy. Finish in style warm chocolate fondant and vanilla ice cream. Musical and themed dining evenings and other events are held frequently.
