This pretty old village institution slumbers contentedly beside a lane in tranquil countryside just inland from Maldon's creeks and sea-marshes. Muscular posts and rippling beams inside hint at the age of the building, which is much older than its first licence in 1837. There's a simply enormous garden here, dappled with ancient fruit trees; an ideal location for their June beer festival. Year-round treats on the bar include beers from Dark Star and Wibblers, who also provide the local cider. The consummate menu covers all bases: pigeon pie; walnut and almond roast; and smoked haddock Florentine are typical choices on the locally sourced bill of fare.
