This uniquely named, tile-hung pub was built on land owned by the Nevill family, the Earls of Abergavenny. So the ‘Crest’ is easily explained; a cannon that once stood outside accounts for the ‘Gun’. The hamlet’s balancing act on the Kent-Sussex border is reflected by the real ales dispensed in the low-beamed, wooden-floored bar: all ales are sourced from the two counties, giving a local feel to the whole affair. A springtime Sunday lunch menu offers carrot and coriander soup to start; mains like venison and rabbit meatballs with red wine and tomato ragù; or trout with pan-fried gnocchi, rainbow chard, clams and seaweed butter; and clementine and chocolate tart with green apple sorbet for dessert.
