This family-orientated pub is in the heart of ‘Winnie the Pooh’ country. It was built in 1465 and was at one time a workhouse before it became a pub in the late 19th century. Locals meet in the front bar with its stone floors and heavy wooden beams, plus the inglenook fireplace and library area give the back bar a more intimate feel. As well as hot and cold snacks, main courses such as Cumberland sausages and mash or battered haddock, chips and peas satisfy heartier appetites. Friday evening is steak night. The front verandah and large garden are a bonus on warm sunny days. Look out for the early May beer festival.
