This stylishly modernised and extended old village pub stands at the heart of charming Sancton, past which the Wolds Way recreational footpath threads across the tranquil Yorkshire landscape. Beers from local microbreweries tempt ramblers to linger longer; more leisurely visits are rewarded by a reliable bar menu considerably enhanced by an evening restaurant choice. Yorkshire pudding with braised oxtail and caramelised onion; or smoked haddock kedgeree balls for starters; followed by roast monkfish tail with braised lentils and crispy ham; or calves' liver with crispy onions and potato purée with wilted greens; both typical of the satisfying mains which chef-proprietor Ben Cox crafts from local produce. Banana cake with peanut butter parfait, chocolate soil and toffee sauce rounds it all off.
