A charming, family-run free house that is 300 years old but may not look it at first glance. Giveaways are the low beams and open fireplaces in the bar, wooden floors, modern fabrics and wall-mounted coach-lamps. Bar meals are served every lunchtime (except Monday) and evening, from the extensive menu. Look out for choices like an 8oz fillet steak; cod goujons with chips and peas; crispy roast duck with plum and ginger sauce; or leek and Wensleydale potato cakes with spicy tomato relish. A paddock adjoining the large beer garden runs down to the River Derwent.
