In the 19th century this part-thatched country pub on Cranborne Chase served visitors to General Augustus Pitt-Rivers' small archaeological and anthropological museum, now relocated to Oxford. The interior features the original inglenook fireplace, flagstone floors, a fashionable mismatch of furniture and a book-filled sitting room. If you're passionate about your real ales or ciders, the bar will oblige with Sixpenny 6D Best, Flacks Double Drop and Aspall cider. Local estates and farms supply many of the ingredients for dishes awarded two AA Rosettes. Pitt-Rivers also created Larmer Tree Gardens, a public pleasure garden, on his Rushmore Estate near Tollard Royal.
