An integral part of the village street scene, this former farmstead was first licensed as the Country House Inn in 1840; then, in the 1960s, when geese began intimidating customers, it acquired a new name. Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale and Sandford Orchards Devon Mist cider represent the county in the bar. On offer is home-made pub food that includes smoked trout with rock samphire at lunchtime, and in the evening guinea fowl supreme, truffled polenta, cauliflower; and wild garlic and bean spelt risotto with goat curd. Pie and quiz nights are worth catching.
