Originally used as accommodation by masons and other craftsmen enlarging the church in 1450, this inn has a contemporary style despite its considerable age; the bread oven and original fireplace remain. The inn is popular with walkers and cyclists as it is just six miles from Exmoor National Park, so it’s a pretty good idea to make for The Swan after being out and about in the fresh air. At the solid oak counter you’ll find Devon Storm, Otter and Proper Job real ales and Ashridge Devon Gold cider. If you’re staying for a something to eat, then Brock Hall Farm goats’ cheese fritter, beetroot and orange gets a meal off to a good start, followed by smoked Creedy Carver duck breast, salt baked celeriac purée, quail Scotch egg and vermouth sauce; or Brixham cod fillet, Bombay potato, pea purée and curry essence. Desserts shouldn’t be overlooked – sticky ginger pudding, toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream; or spiced plum and port crumble. The inn is open on Mondays but food isn’t served.
