The whitewashed building might be 16th century and the 19th-century name refers to the nearby railway line, but the food here is absolutely 21st century, served in a chic, modern dining pub-restaurant. Taken over in 2015 by the St Austell Brewery, the traditional exterior disguises the crisp, clean lines and finish within, where reliable West Country beers such as Branscombe Vale Branoc, combined with an appealing menu, combine to make The Puffing Billy a favourite destination dining bar. The home-cooked dishes are seasonal and locally sourced so along with pub classics you can expect the likes of baked fig, parma ham, parmesan crisp, rocket and sherry vinaigrette; and Darts Farm 28-day dry aged 10oz rump steak. The neighbouring Exe estuary and the distant upwellings of Dartmoor's hills and woods may be glimpsed from the tables at the front.
