Tucked away in the Blackdown Hills, but only five miles from Honiton, this ancient building has a delightfully quirky interior with original beams, sisal flooring and wood-burning stove. Otter Amber and Branscombe Vale Branoc are among the five Devon ales dispensed from the convivial bar, alongside local Tricky cider and an extensive wine list. On a no-frills menu featuring daily-changing specials, a starter of home-made chicken liver and date pâté with caramelised red onion and toast might be followed by oven-roasted duck breast with celeriac mash, braised red cabbage and port sauce. Easter Bank Holiday is beer festival time.
