The Cricket Inn first opened its doors in 1867 and has since survived storms, a World War II bomb and a mudslide. Located in a small South Hams fishing village, the inn encompasses a dog-friendly bar serving West Country ales, an AA-Rosette restaurant with sea views, and bright and airy accommodation. Cooking just metres from the beach and clear waters of Start Bay, the head chef works closely with local fishermen who bring their catch straight to the kitchen door. From the menu, start with crispy cuttlefish, wild garlic aïoli and watercress; goats’ cheese mousse, spiced carrot purée, pickled carrots and ginger breadcrumb; or scallops, pork belly, apple purée, crispy pig’s head and crackling. Continue with a seafood pancake stuffed with scallops, prawns and cod; fish pie; or truffled mac and cheese, all made with produce from the Devonshire countryside and its waters.
