Beer festival

This 450-year-old inn overlooks a small landlocked harbour on the River Exe and was once the haunt of smugglers. There is even a friendly ghost with his dog. In summer, customers spill out onto the verandah and harbour wall, while real fires, nautical bric-à-brac and low beams make the interior cosy in winter. For fish dish lovers, the comprehensive menu will make decisions difficult – there are over 20 different ways to eat mussels, and plenty of scallop dishes and fish platters. Meat-eaters and vegetarians are not forgotten. Sample main courses include homity pie; Asian spiced marinated tuna, fried tempura style; pan-fried Gressingham duck breast with tomato, leek and bell pepper sauce; and scampi and chips. Beer festivals twice a year around Easter and Halloween.
