In a village-edge location between the formality of Chatsworth’s vast estate, bold gritstone edges and the memorable wooded limestone dales of Derbyshire’s River Wye, this comfortably unchanging, creeper-clad old inn ticks all the right boxes for beers and food. Real ales from Peak Ales and Bradfield breweries couldn’t be more local, whilst all meals are prepared in-house: kick off with prawn cocktail or onion bhaji, and follow with lamb cooked in coconut, black pepper and Indian spices; rainbow trout baked with butter and almonds; or aubergine and mushroom lasagne to take the chill off a long ramble. Oak beams and furnishing and log fires complete the picture.
