Set on a wooded ridge at the fringe of a pretty Peak District village, this classic stone-built inn has been here for over four centuries. The all-day menus make the place an ideal retreat for ramblers exploring the evocative stone circles and rock formations of the local vales and moors. It's also increasingly popular as a dining destination. Home-in first on the great selection of top-notch real ales – Blue Monkey, Kelham Island and Abbeydale amongst many – and grab a seat on the terrace before studying a revelatory menu that offers both stalwart pub grub choices and cutting-edge dishes. Start off with crab tartare with kiwi salsa and crispy toast, or roast figs with ricotta dip, followed up by mushroom burger with chips and salad; smokey ocean pie with crispy cheddar topping, or baked cod with roast fennel and courgette sauce. Desserts include lemon drizzle cake and chocolate mousse torte. The blackboard menus change weekly and are complemented with occasional specialist taster menus.
