Set on a wooded ridge at the fringe of a pretty Peak District village, this classic stone-built inn has been here for over four centuries. The all-day menus make the place an ideal retreat for ramblers exploring the evocative stone circles and rock formations of the local vales and moors. It's also increasingly popular as a dining destination. Home-in first on the great selection of top-notch real ales – Blue Monkey and Abbeydale amongst many – and grab a seat on the terrace before studying a revelatory menu that offers both stalwart pub grub choices and cutting-edge dishes. Prosecco and lemon thyme risotto, taleggio bonbons is a great starter; chased up by mains like Dixie’s three little piggies – cheek, fillet and belly – with apple and black pudding; or perhaps confit salmon and cucumber, candied garlic, tikka spices, apple and snow peas. The blackboard menus change weekly and are complemented with occasional specialist taster menus.
