Taken over in September 2017 by Louie Lawrence, who was previously the chef, this 17th-century coaching inn in the Eden Valley is well placed for excursions to the shores of Ullswater or the great fells of the high Pennines. Some of the best Cumbrian microbrewery beers from the likes of Eden and Hesket Newmarket draw guests into the beamed, country-style interior. A typical menu includes fresh sardines on toast with tomato chutney and slow-cooked Cumbrian pork belly, Savoy, smoked bacon and Puy lentils. Leave room for the warm caramelised apple sponge with rum and raisin ice cream.
