Occasionally, landlord Mark Cockbain crosses the lane from his yellow-painted, 17th-century pub to fish for salmon and trout in the River Cocker. For visitors it’s the panoramic views of the lush Vale of Lorton from the child-friendly beer garden that matter. The quaint, open-fired bar looks like a gamekeeper’s lodge: “We like our locals to feel at home,” says Mark’s wife, Jackie. Real ales from Jennings in Cockermouth also help in that respect. On the menu are home-made fish cakes, breaded haloumi chips, fresh fish, burgers and local lamb. A gluten-free menu is also available. The end of August is beer festival time.
