The market town of Kirkby Lonsdale retains immense character and charm, beautifully evidenced in the classic 17th-century building that is The Sun Inn. An ideal base from which to explore the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, the pub burrows back from a pretty pillared frontage into a mix of low-slung beams and cosy alcoves focussed on a feature fireplace. The owners are keen supporters of local produce; expect beer from the town's microbrewery to accompany menus inspired by the surrounding countryside. A starter of pan-fried wood pigeon, redslaw, blackberry vinaigrette and potato crisps complements a main of rump of lamb, celeriac terrine, whey potatoes braised lamb shoulder croquette.
