This listed 17th-century coaching inn is at the heart of the charming Hawkshead village and makes a great base for exploring the Lakes. The wood-panelled bar has low, oak-beamed ceilings, and hill walkers and others will enjoy the log fires, real ales and locally sourced food. Choices range from crispy confit rabbit wontons, to venison terrine with cured ham and chestnuts for starters; and for mains from sharing curry platter, to Cumbrian lamb shoulder with a lamb and mint jus.
