This listed 17th-century coaching inn is at the heart of the charming Hawkshead village and makes a great base for exploring the Lakes. The wood-panelled bar has low, oak-beamed ceilings, and hill walkers and others will enjoy the log fires, real ales and locally sourced food. Choices range from fresh Scottish mussels in white wine, garlic and cream sauce, to venison terrine with wild mushrooms, chestnuts and pancetta for starters; and for mains from pan-seared hake fillet with colcannon potatoes, cabbage and seafood chowder, to butternut squash and goats' cheese risotto with roasted pine nuts and rocket.
