Attractive free house serving good home-cooked food

Bar menu
Open all year

With cartwheels lined up outside, this former smithy faces a small green by the crossroads in the centre of the village. On its doorstep is northern Cumbria’s wildly beautiful countryside. The menu of good, traditional home cooking makes extensive use of fresh local produce for smoked haddock and spring onion fishcakes; steak and ale pie; sweet and sour chicken; Barnsley double lamb chop; and spinach and ricotta cannelloni. At lunchtime a choice of sandwiches, paninis and baked potatoes is offered. Four real ales are always available; there’s a beer garden, and out front a couple of tables with seating.
