In this charming 600-year-old inn near the Helford River, Will and Lisa Lea have created a popular bistro and local. The Cornish name means 'a settlement above the trees', although it actually lies at the foot of a densely wooded valley. In the black-beamed bar, oft-changing local real ales might include Penzance Potion No 9, served from the stillage shared with Healey's Cornish Rattler and Ty Gwyn ciders; 15 wines are sold by the glass, and over 40 malts clamour for attention. A typical dish, most likely sourced from a local farm or fishing boat, could be one of the specials, such as spring onion with roasted crab meat; chicken satay with fragrant rice; or wild mushroom and cheddar cheese risotto. Pub classics include 8oz Cornish sirloin steaks with home-made chips and mushrooms; and Thai pork burger with chilli mayonnaise. Meadows surround the pretty beer garden and its vine-shaded pergola.
