Deep in the Cheshire countryside near to a dramatic wooded sandstone ridge, is this half-timbered country inn. There's no hiding the near-400-year heritage of the place, though; the huge cruck frame and crackling fire create rustic character and charm, which set-off nicely the light, conservatory-inspired dining extension which overlooks the tranquil garden and increasingly rare bowling green. The riches of the northern Welsh Marches are liberally sourced, with great beers from Cheshire's Weetwood brewery matched by the wide-ranging menu – platters, salads, chargrills, sandwiches, and pub classics.
