With its red brick and black and white timbering, this higgledy-piggledy Brunning & Price pub was designed by Victorian architect John Douglas, who designed around 500 buildings, many of them in Cheshire. The spacious, open-plan interior includes an airy conservatory and a panelled, book-filled library. Smoked haddock, salmon and cod gratin makes a tasty opener to beef rendang; chicken, ham hock and leek pie; pink-roasted duck breast; and Mexican vegetarian burger. A terrace leads into a small, pleasant garden, and on out to the village green.
