Open all year

Local shoots, walkers and town folk frequent this classic 17th-century country inn. Full of character and warmth, it has three roaring fires and a wealth of oak, nooks and crannies, pictures and old furniture. Food options range from light bites such as Shropshire Blue and butternut squash quiche to full meals – maybe smoked pigeon breast with blackberry, hazelnut salad and black pudding croûtons, followed by smoked haddock and salmon fishcakes; or rabbit and prune faggots with celeriac mash, buttered kale and wild mushroom gravy. You could finish with a hot waffle, warm blackberries and salted caramel ice cream. There is a great choice of real ales and ciders, an informative wine list and impressive cheese board.
