The rather cute explanation for the pub’s name is that a fox being chased by the local hunt ran into the cellar, where the landlord gave it sanctuary. And who’s to say otherwise? Interior features include a huge open log fire, old beams and half-panelled walls; the snug bar is the perfect spot for a pint of Weetwood. Classic pub food with an adventurous angle includes twice baked Cheshire cheese soufflé; and white onion soup with cheddar and sage as starters; then game suet pudding, garlic mash and juniper sauce; smoked salmon omelette; lamb hotpot with red cabbage; or hand-made goats’ cheese gnocchi as main courses. Outside is a secluded landscaped garden surrounded by unspoilt Cheshire countryside.
