Just off Ermine Street, the old Roman road from London to York, is Shaina Galvin's mansard-roofed village pub. A white picket fence surrounds the street frontage, while in the large rear garden are the majestic eponymous willow tree, a heated terrace, a swing and, when warm, deckchairs. The shabby-chic interior incorporates an open fireplace and a medley of non-matching dining chairs. The menu features three pea and parmesan risotto; pan-fried scallops with bacon, apple and cauliflower purée as starters, followed by venison haunch, celeriac dauphinoise, red cabbage purée and juniper jus; or Tilbury Meadows rib-eye or fillet steak, hand-cut chips and green peppercorn sauce. A two day music and drink festival is held in summer.
