This lovely old free house dates back to the 1500s and is often used as a filming location for dramas such as Midsomer Murders, Miss Marple and Restless. Low beams and careworn flooring give the pub a timeless feeling, underlined by the steam trains chugging past on the heritage railway beyond the village green. Ramblers who drop down from the wooded Chiltern scarp can fill up on generously filled baguettes and rustic home-made meals like beef lasagne with garlic bread; and hot smoked mackerel fillets with salad and boiled potatoes, boosted by daily-changing specials.
