In the quiet backstreets of Bristol’s leafy Redland district, this Victorian corner pub still attracts discerning local drinkers but the food has a much wider reach. The elegant dining room is packed with mismatched antique furniture, Victorian prints and views into the open kitchen. The modern British food utilises the very best local produce and the menu changes daily, with meat from the region’s farms, and fish delivered daily from Cornwall. In the bar, try the burger or venison pie with your pint of Morland Old Golden Hen or Westons Stowford Press cider. Typical restaurant dishes in the evening are starters of mussels, celery and cream; or duck hearts on toast. These might be followed by Cornish pollack, Tarbais beans and gremolata; or Middle White chop and Agen prunes. Finish with blood orange and rhubarb sorbet; pear and almond tart with bay leaf ice cream; or a selection of artisan cheeses.
