Acquired and refurbished by Wadworth, the lovely old brick and beamed Bird in Hand dates back to the 14th century, and has its share of history; apparently George III was one past visitor. There’s a sunny terrace for outdoor dining. Obviously Wadworth supply the ales, but the food is all home-made. Nibble on some Thai chilli nuts while you’re waiting, and then start with ham hock terrine with pickled vegetables, or venison and Armagnac pâté with crostini; before wild mushroom linguine, smoked trout and beetroot salad with horseradish crème fraîche, or Thai green chicken and coconut curry. If you've room, there's plum frangipane tart or seasonal fruit crumble for afters.
