This varies based on your individual needs and circumstances, so be sure that your choice reflects it:
- If you're covering a mortgage, think about how long your mortgage is.
- If you're thinking about protecting your family, consider things like the age at which your children will leave home, or the length of time you'll be providing the most support for your family.
How much cover should I choose?
You can choose any amount, subject to a £6 minimum premium, as long as it meets your needs. You can take into account the value of your mortgage, your monthly bills and outgoings, or the cost of educating a child.
What does 'term' mean?
The term is how long you would like to be covered for in years, and you can specify the length of the policy based on your individual needs and circumstances.
If you die during the term, the policy could pay a cash sum. For more information about how long you can be covered for, please refer to the Policy Summary document.
What does 'sum assured' mean?
The 'sum assured', also known as the 'cash sum' or 'amount of cover', is the amount you want the policy to pay out if you die during the policy term.
What's the difference between Terminal illness cover and Critical illness cover?
Terminal illness cover is included with our policies at no extra cost. It covers you if you're diagnosed with a terminal illness and given 12 months to live. Minimum term is 2 years.
Once your diagnosed the policy could pay out, allowing you to set your affairs in order before your death.
Critical illness cover is available to add to our life insurance policies, at the outset, for an additional cost. It covers you for conditions that could affect your life and work, which tend to be conditions that you wouldn't necessarily die from, but that might cause long term suffering – for example multiple sclerosis or cancer.
Adding critical illness cover to a life insurance policy means that if you're diagnosed with one of the specified conditions and eligible to claim, the policy pays out – but please be aware that not all forms of cancer are covered.
