The Volkswagen Golf has proved to be a popular vehicle across Europe, after topping the sales polls during April.
JATO Dynamics has revealed that the Golf reclaimed its title as Europe’s top-selling car from the Ford Fiesta.
These, alongside the Volkswagen Polo and the Fiat Panda, were the only four to witness increased sales year-to-date over the same period last year.
The Fiesta in particular saw strong sales in the big five new car markets consisting of Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the UK.
David Di Girolamo, head of JATO Consult, said: "National government scrappage schemes are really starting to have an impact, both in the sales volumes in different markets and in the type of cars being sold.
"The bigger picture shows the size of the drop in new car sales across Europe and well continue to monitor this closely for signs of a wider improvement."
Meanwhile, Volkswagen also remained the best selling manufacturer across Europe.
Those motorists opting for the 2.0-litre TDI Golf can expect to generate 129g/km of carbon dioxide.
